What do camels' toes and running shoes have in common? They both relieve the pressure
Camels' toes, the animal not the underwear variety, have fat pads which Australian researchers have shown help to reduce the foot pressures as camels run faster and faster. The fat pad underneath the animals' feet varies considerably across species, but links between its shape and function have remained unclear. By comparing camel and alpaca toes, the researchers found that the fat pads on camels' toes can increase area in contact with the ground when their running speed increases - in much the same way as our own running shoes operate.
