Toxic firefighting chemical may contaminate even after cleanup
A chemical used in firefighting foam may continue to leach into landfills after being cleaned up, new research suggests. PFAS contamination has been cleaned up from a number of waterways around the world, including Australia and New Zealand, but researchers say not enough is known about how it interacts with the materials used to clean it up. They say an ideal solution would be to develop a method to destroy PFAS, so that there’s no need to store it anywhere long term.
