From: Australian Science Media CentreWith winter officially under way on Wednesday, and the dark and cold creeping in, coughs and colds are also on their way. Join us as we keep warm and discuss what is in store for us during this chilly season, and what we can do to keep the lurgies away.
The briefing will discuss the following issues:
- Influenza - are we in for a bad flu season?
- Quadrivalent flu jab - what is it? how is it different from previously available vaccines?
- Common cold - why do we get more in winter and how to avoid them?
- Cough and sniffles - can you tell if is bacterial or viral - and when should you see a doctor?
- Norovirus - the winter vomiting bug.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - Can we get it in Australia? What does the season have in store for our mental health?
Speakers:
- Dr Ian Barr is Acting Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, at the Doherty Institute.
- Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Rhonda Stuart is the Medical Director for Infection Prevention & Epidemiology at Monash Infectious Diseases, Monash University. She is also a member of the Immunisation Coalition.
- Professor Greg Murray is Head of Psychological Sciences and Statistics (PSS) at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.
