A better way to talk about how extreme weather links to climate change

Embargoed until: Publicly released:
With every flood, drought or heatwave, scientists are often asked: "What caused this, was this climate change?” Now Australian researchers are suggesting there may be a better way of answering these questions that helps the public understand how certain we can be about these links. For example, instead of just talking about the ocean heat during the 2016 Great Barrier Reef bleaching event as being 175 times more likely due to climate change, they suggest also allocating it to the category: "virtually certain could not have happened without climate change."
