Oil fields in the North Sea, and remote petroleum wells in Australia, are using renewable energy like solar power to electrify their fossil fuel production. The authors of a new study into the phenomenon say this can seem counter-intuitive, but may be necessary due to how long it will take for the multi-trillion dollar global transition to renewables. However they warn the idea could risk slowing down the fossil fuel industry's momentum to shift away from oil and gas.
