Youth depression and anxiety doubled during pandemic

Embargoed until: Publicly released:
Peer-reviewed: This work was reviewed and scrutinised by relevant independent experts.

Meta-analysis: This type of study involves using statistics to combine the data from multiple previous studies to give an overall result. The reliability of a meta-analysis depends on both the quality and similarity of the individual studies being grouped together.

People: This is a study based on research using people.

A review of the available scientific evidence suggests that 1 in 4 youth globally are showing depression symptoms, while 1 in 5 youth have anxiety symptoms. To come to that conclusion, researchers looked at 29 studies, including more than 80,000 youth globally. They say these estimates are double the pre-pandemic estimates and remain high, meaning plans will need to be put in place for the demand for mental health recovery.
