The 2021 Census 'straight-washed' data and marginalised Aussies with diverse genders or sexualities

Publicly released:
Australia; VIC

The 2021 Australian Census forms marginalised those with diverse genders or sexualities, according to Australian experts, who say the forms limited their ability to be counted and considered in the policy process and the national allocation of resources. They point to the re-categorising of non-binary people into male/female response options as an example of "straight-washing" of the data, while other questions only allowed binary responses or made assumptions about sexuality based on the sex of one's partner. They say the Census favours specific expressions of sex, gender, sexuality, and intimacy, particularly those aligned with a heterosexual, cisgender, and biologically related nuclear family models.
