In coastal forests along the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, the westland petrel builds nesting burrows which can be destroyed by earthquakes or extreme weather. This paper finds it's important that the endemic birds are able to rebuild their habitat across a wide range of forest, to cope well after disasters. The study also states how petrel poop can help create a habitat for unusual beetles and mites.
