The controversial practice of discharging wastewater into rivers could be putting more than just poo into streams. Researchers found microplastics built up on UK riverbeds after "dry weather" discharges, choking the aquatic creatures living there, until cleared by flooding. They say climate change and urban population growth will worsen this problem, but treating the wastewater before it is released would shut down this major source of microplastic fragments.
