US researchers looked for COVID-19 antibodies in a sample of 61,910 people who did not think they had caught the virus, and say their findings suggest the number of COVID-19 cases in the USA may be more than double the number reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), implying that the pandemic may be much more widespread than we thought. Of the 61,910 participants, 4,094 had COVID-19 antibodies, despite being completely unaware they had caught the virus. Extrapolating their findings to cover the whole country, the researchers say there may have been around 16 million asymptomatic or undiagnosed COVID-19 infections in the country as of September 30, 2020

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in US Adult Asymptomatic Population

What The Study Did: The findings of this study suggest that, based on a sample from an otherwise healthy population, the overall number of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the U.S. may be substantially higher than estimates based on public health case reporting.
