The phenomenon of “atmospheric rivers”, where long, narrow bands of moisture travel through the atmosphere, is linked to many of New Zealand's extreme rainstorms - up to 98 per cent of them, depending on the region and season. Furthermore, NZ’s median daily rainfall linked to atmospheric rivers is 2-3 times greater than rainfall linked to other storms. University of Auckland researchers say their findings can help experts understand the impact from atmospheric rivers on extreme rain events in New Zealand.
