The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) is giving journalists embargoed access to the Geographical variation in disease: diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease web product.

  • Local media outlets can use the information to produce stories on the distribution of the impact of 3 interrelated chronic diseases and their risk factors at the regional level.
  • The AIHW will not issue a media release but statistical advice is available.

Geographical variation in disease: diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease:

  • Presents 36 dynamic dashboards and 108 maps showing the distribution of the impact of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease (including dialysis and acute kidney injury) by small geography areas.
  • Selected measures summarise the impact of each disease, including:
    • How many people have the disease? (prevalence number and rate)
    • How many hospitalisations are related to the disease? (hospitalisation number and rate); and
    • How many people die from the disease? (death number and rate)
  • Summary statistics on local health risk profile and population characteristics are presented alongside the maps, providing contextual information.
  • The dashboards link from a summary web report which also includes key findings, detailed technical notes and supplementary data tables.
