How do Australian dairy farms reduce their greenhouse gas emissions?

Dairy farmers could theoretically cut their greenhouse gas emissions by nearly half with current technologies but it is not yet cost-effective to do so, according to Australian researchers who say the growing demand for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farming means the dairy industry will have to adapt to stay competitive in a global market. The researchers outline what we currently know about reducing emissions on dairy farms and the current areas of research, and say farms could theoretically reduce enteric methane by 40-50% and reduce whole-farm emissions by another 5–10% using currently available strategies. They say there is more research work to be done, however, to make these and other greenhouse gas-reducing strategies financially viable and encourage farmers to adopt them.
