How an alcohol industry backed report on violence sowed seeds of doubt

An alcohol industry-backed report on alcohol and violence, released in 2015, is still used as a resource to back up claims by the alcohol industry,  and is a ‘counterfeit scientific controversy’ rather than a genuine scientific debate, according to authors of a new study. They say the report has not made a valuable contribution to the scientific literature, and the author of the report has longstanding associations with alcohol industry organisations. The report was widely reported in the media as suggesting that it was the macho Aussie culture that was to blame for violence, rather than booze. The authors say the report continues to be used in alcohol industry submissions to government.
