Fish twice a week could be a lifesaver for people with heart disease

Publicly released:
Australia; International

Two servings of fish a week could help prevent people with heart disease from having major heart attacks or strokes, according to international research which included Australian and NZ data. The research pooled together four previous studies to look at data from close to 150,000 people. It found that there was a lower risk of major cardiovascular disease and total mortality that was linked to a higher fish intake of at least 175 g (2 servings) weekly among high-risk individuals or patients with vascular disease, but not in general populations. A similar pattern of results was observed for sudden cardiac death.
