As the Alpha variant took hold in Israel, COVID-19 spread from young kids doubled

As the Alpha COVID-19 variant became dominant in Israel from December 2020 to April 2021, transmission rates from children under nine to other contacts doubled, according to new research. However, hospitalisation rates among children decreased, suggesting the variant has increased contagiousness among kids but not necessarily increased severity. The authors say the higher levels of spread in kids during December 2020 to February 2021 occurred despite the mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign in adults. They say this highlights the importance of making COVID-19 vaccines available for young children.
