Around 1 in 10 Australians are struggling to catch their breath

Publicly released:
Australia; NSW

A National Breathlessness Survey has found that around 1 in 10 Australians report clinically important levels of breathlessness and say that that they walk slower than people of the same age or have to stop for breath when walking. Among those who reporting feeling breathless, around half rated their general health as fair or poor and 44 per cent had at least moderate depression or anxiety symptoms. Just over half of those who were breathless did not report a current respiratory or heart condition diagnosis. The authors say this shows that breathlessness is common among Australian adults, and is associated with a substantial burden of ill health.
