Transgender people have higher death rates than their cis gender peers

Embargoed until: Publicly released:
Peer-reviewed: This work was reviewed and scrutinised by relevant independent experts.

Observational study: A study in which the subject is observed to see if there is a relationship between two or more things (eg: the consumption of diet drinks and obesity). Observational studies cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that they are linked.

People: This is a study based on research using people.

A study using UK data has found that transgender people have mortality rates that are 34 - 75% higher than cisgender people. The research found they were at higher risk of deaths from external causes such as suicides, homicides, and accidental poisonings, as well as deaths from endocrine disorders, and other ill-defined and unspecified causes. The researchers say the findings highlight the need to develop interventions to prevent suicide, homicide, and accidental poisonings to reduce mortality for transgender individuals.
