Smoking and vaping may lead to eye problems

Embargoed until: Publicly released:
Peer-reviewed: This work was reviewed and scrutinised by relevant independent experts.

Observational study: A study in which the subject is observed to see if there is a relationship between two or more things (eg: the consumption of diet drinks and obesity). Observational studies cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that they are linked.

People: This is a study based on research using people.

North American researchers say people who smoke and vape have a higher likelihood of issues with their eyes than people who just smoke cigarettes. The researchers looked into the effects of e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes on more than 4,350 people aged 13 to 24, and say those who smoked just cigarettes were more likely to have eye issues such as pain, burning, itching, redness, dryness, glare, blurriness, as well as headaches, than those who only used e-cigarettes, but the combo led to the most frequent symptoms.
