NZ rest home staff hide medications in food

Publicly released:
New Zealand; VIC

A new study reveals New Zealand rest home staff routinely crush pills into food, in order to covertly give them to residents who often refuse their medication. During interviews with researchers, the staff said they feel ethically torn between respecting a resident's wishes, and their duty to make sure residents get the treatment they need. The researchers say there are no clear guidelines around this practice in New Zealand, and staff should have more support to make the right decisions.
