Kaupapa Māori researchers spoke with several rangatahi Māori living in Tāmaki Mākaurau about their experiences securing housing. Participants overwhelmingly felt they are negatively stereotyped when they look for housing, with one woman recounting a positive initial phone interaction that was followed by a change in attitude upon meeting in person. Lack of awareness of existing housing support and systemic challenges and barriers were other themes that emerged through individual interviews and wānanga. The team argues for more targeted housing support and resources to help rangatahi Māori realise their kāinga aspirations.
