The challenging process of getting an adult ADHD diagnosis could be encouraging misdiagnosis, according to a perspective piece by Australian authors. The team discuss the rise in interest in adult ADHD diagnoses, and the concern that current discussions around ADHD, especially on social media, could mean normal variability in behaviour is becoming "medicalised". On the other hand, the researchers note an adult diagnosis can be life-changing for some people, and it may be that the current difficulty in accessing a professional diagnosis, especially for people who have specific challenges navigating the healthcare system, means those who need a diagnosis and subsequent support the most are less likely to get it.
