Australian researchers have estimated the numbers of two endangered mammals living on the Illawarra Range, NSW - the koala and the southern greater glider. The team used thermal drones to survey 47 sites in the region, finding 56 koalas and 127 gliders over a total area of 1175 hectares. The researchers calculated that the average density of koalas in the region was 0.13 per hectare, and glider density was 0.17 per hectare. They say this density information is needed to track future changes in these endangered populations.
