Iwi and hapu from around Aotearoa face land issues, when they are unable to reach missing shareholders, or are presented with fragmented and conflicting data sources. A collaboration between Victoria University of Wellington, Parininihi ki Waitotara Incorporation, and the University of Auckland illustrates how to avoid neo-colonial approaches when using historical records to find and engage with missing shareholders in a Māori land corporation. Instead of focussing on information about named individuals, the researchers used computational approaches and expert community knowledge to find information about individuals' relationships to their communities, which helps find missing living shareholders.
