EXPERT REACTION: How common is asymptomatic COVID-19?
Observational study: A study in which the subject is observed to see if there is a relationship between two or more things (eg: the consumption of diet drinks and obesity). Observational studies cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that they are linked.
People: This is a study based on research using people.
Two papers published today highlight the asymptomatic nature of COVID-19. In a JAMA Network Open paper, researchers highlight that in a study of 78 patients, 42.3 per cent were found to show no symptoms. In an unrelated study by Australian authors, published in Thorax, researchers found more than 8 out of 10 cruise ship passengers who tested positive for COVID-19 had no symptoms. Australian experts respond.
