Countries where people drink more alcohol tend to have higher suicide rates, according to international researchers who brought togther and re-anlaysed the data from 13 previous studies. These looked mostly at high-income European and North American nations. Overall, the researchers found that for each 1 litre increase in per capita alcohol consumption, suicide rates rose by 3.59%, and the link was the same for men and women. They suggest alcohol consumption could be a useful target to consider in national suicide prevention strategies.

Alcohol Consumption Per Capita and Suicide

About The Study: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, an increase in alcohol consumption per capita was associated with an increase in the suicide mortality rate at the population level and that the association was similar across sexes. As such, alcohol consumption per capita may be a useful target to consider within comprehensive national suicide prevention strategies.
