Chinese researchers from a university that specialises in traditional Chinese medicine say that acupuncture was more effective than a sham procedure in helping stroke patients get their speech back. The team worked with 252 patients who had poststroke motor aphasia - the inability to speak or to organise the muscular movements of speech - and gave them either acupuncture or a sham acupuncture treatment over six weeks. After six months of follow up appointments, the team say the group that received acupuncture showed significant improvements in their language function, quality of life, and neurological impairment, compared to the sham treatment.
