A single dose of the RSV vaccine could help protect older people over three seasons of the virus, although the efficacy of the vaccine decreases over time, according to an international and Australian trial. The study found the vaccine was 82.6% effective in the first RSV season, and that this efficacy dropped to  56% and 48% in seasons two and three, respectively. Although the efficacy had dropped by the third season, the incidence of RSV infections remained lower in those who received the vaccine compared with a group given a non-active, placebo jab. Having a booster about a year after the first vaccine made little difference to the efficacy of the vaccine. The authors say further research is needed to establish the optimal booster strategy.
