US scientists say sticking to a Mediterranean-style diet may help slow down cognitive decline. They measured  hippocampal sclerosis (HS) - a severe decline in brain cells and processes in particular areas of the brain which is linked with dementia and Alzheimer's - in 809 people for whom dietary information and brain autopsies were available. They found those on the MIND diet, which combines elements of the Mediterranean diet and a diet called DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), were less likely to have signs of HS in their brains. The authors say the findings suggest sticking to the MIND diet may reduce the risk of HS, dementia and Alzmeimer's disease.
