Tocilizumab - A drug used for treating COVID-19 - has shown some promise in treating hantavirus, according to an early report from a larger ongoing study. The researchers looked at the impact of tocilizumab on five people with severe hantavirus pulmonary syndrome requiring ICU admission, compared with five people who were not given tocilizumab. Four of the five patients given tocilizumab survived and were discharged, while none of the patients who were not given tocilizumab survived. The researchers emphasise that this is an early report from an ongoing study and therefore includes only a small number of patients, and the patients who were not issued tocilizumab were also generally older and more severely ill than those who were given the drug, which may have impacted these early results.
