Previous media experience

I was a university lecturer for 10 years (JCU, UoW) and have given thousands of lectures and presentations to a wide range of audiences. I also run an educational outreach program for kids in my spare time and have interacted with nearly 7000 kids from Nov 2021 to Dec 2023 all across Australia as well as Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. I have worked with media for print articles and radio, and in 2019 I was a guest on the Channel 10 Science show for kids named Scope. I have also presented a stage show at the Perth Science Festival.

Biography

Marji Puotinen is a spatial marine scientist who investigates how tropical cyclone waves can both damage coral reefs around the world as well as cool them during times when ocean water is overheated (thermal stress). She reconstructs past and future time sequences of cyclone exposure that can be used to help explain changes in marine ecosystems over time - like coral reefs, mangroves and seaweeds.
