Dr Julia Henning

Biography

Dr. Julia Henning holds a PhD in Veterinary Science and Animal Behaviour. Her work on human-cat play interactions has led to increased understanding of feline behaviour, emotions and communication, and highlights the importance of considering the influence of human perceptions on animal welfare outcomes.

Dr. Henning has a special interest in the relationships and interactions between humans and animals and how these impact both animal welfare and human wellbeing. Her early work on feline epilepsy provided some of the first evidence for owner burden of care in owners of chronically ill cats.

Her recent research on how cats transition from outdoor roaming to indoor-only lifestyles has challenged preconceived notions, finding that while most cats adjust more easily, and in a shorter time frame than expected, their owners struggle with the logistical changes needed.

Dr. Henning has authored multiple peer-reviewed papers, regularly contributes to science communication articles on animal welfare and feline behaviour and has extensive experience communicating science to both general and technical audiences, as well as across broadcast, digital, and print media.
