Biography

Mars Buttfield-Addison is a PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania and CSIRO, and a freelance technologist for all things space and technology. Her current area of research is in adaptation of radio astronomy and radar instrumentation for more precise and continuous tracking of spacecraft and space debris. Prior to this, her work in novel sensor utilisation and artificial intelligence has spanned domains from computer vision and social trend analysis to public health and visual design.

On the side, Mars is an avid volunteer for public science engagement and outreach efforts. In 2023, Mars was named both a Superstar of STEM and the Tasmanian STEM Communicator of the Year. In the future, she seeks to build and staff a community science centre in a small town on the west coast of lutruwita/Tasmania.
