Biography
Dr Xavier Mills is a postdoctoral research fellow whose research examines how social institutions, policy, and data shape the lives of LGBTQIA+ people in Australia. His work makes him well placed to provide expert commentary on the Australian Census, particularly how census design, categories, and data collection influence the visibility, recognition, and representation of queer communities.Xavier's doctoral research explored how queer people experience and define family, demonstrating how institutional systems continue to privilege the nuclear family as a social and political norm. His broader research spans sociology, families, sexuality, and gender, using qualitative interviews and policy analysis to investigate how seemingly neutral systems produce unequal outcomes. His current research examines LGBTIQA+ people's experiences of telehealth psychological support. Xavier has also published research on LGBTQ+ inclusion, non-binary and trans experiences, digital technologies, and young people's experiences of intimate partner violence.
