US scientists say switching from a meaty to a vegan diet should not only help you lose weight, but also save you money. They looked at food costs for 223 participants in a previous study which had randomly assigned each participant to a vegan diet, or told them to stick to their usual choices. Average food costs for the vegan group dropped by 16%, while there was no change in costs among those who continued their previous non-vegan diet. The findings back up previous research which found eating more plant-based foods and curbing meat and dairy saved people between 25% and 29%. Additionally, another internet survey that found vegetarians spend less on food than omnivores, the scientists say.
