The end of compulsory mask wearing, combined with the emergence of the delta variant and waning immunity from vaccines over time, may explain the resurgence of COVID-19 among fully vaccinated healthcare workers in the US, according to new research. The study found that vaccine effectiveness dropped from 90 per cent in March to June, to 65 per cent in July. When they looked at the July cases, they found those who were vaccinated in January or February had a higher infection rate than those vaccinated between March and May, although the infection rate was still much higher among unvaccinated people. The authors say their findings underline the importance of interventions, such as mask wearing and testing alongside vaccinations, and also suggest booster doses may be needed.
