Napier and Gisborne are at the highest risk of heatwaves in New Zealand, scientists have found. Weather station observations dating back to at least 1972 show the cities on the East Coast of the North Island see exceptionally hot heatwaves which often persist for more than three days, with little respite being offered by high minimum temperatures overnight. The research finds the major centres of Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga are also at high risk of heatwaves, although their highest temperatures tend to be slightly lower than the East Coast.
