Tropical areas such as the Top End have a year-long influenza season, and international researchers have been working out when the best time is to vaccinate pregnant mothers to best protect them and their bubs from infection. After looking into data from over 220,000 kids, the researchers say immunising mums at any point through their pregnancy and at any time of the year is shown to be protective for their kids. Interestingly, the researchers say that a vaccine received for a prior flu season also remained protective for newborns.

In this retrospective cohort study in a tropical region with year-round influenza transmission, a strategy of immunizing mothers at any point during their pregnancy was associated with reduced risk of infant influenza hospitalization.
