Researchers have extensively profiled the minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids found in NZ honeydew honey as consumer demand for the varietal grows. Unlike floral honey, most NZ honeydew honey is made when bees feed on the nectar from a certain insect found in Southern beech forests. The research team found NZ’s honeydew honey has “excellent” antioxidant properties and an antioxidant activity comparable to the “gold standard” Manuka honey. The author team writes that more research is needed to see if there are any health promoting effects from our local varietal, but their findings suggest it would have similar health benefits compared to overseas honeydews and to Manuka.
