Those who stop taking antidepressants could experience some side effects, according to Aussie and international researchers, who add that the rates of discontinuation symptoms are lower than those reported in prior reviews. The team looked at 49 clinical trials and found that on average, people who stopped antidepressants experienced one more discontinuation symptom compared to those who stopped taking a placebo or kept taking antidepressants. The most common symptom in the first two weeks was dizziness, followed by nausea. Other symptoms included vertigo and nervousness, but importantly, not depressive symptoms, meaning that if depressive symptoms return, there could be a depression relapse, the team adds.
