What is it like trying to get a job after you've been in prison?

People coming out of prison face multiple challenges when looking for work including not having access to suitable housing, criminal background checks, managing post-release commitments (such as attending substance abuse rehabilitation appointments) and a lack of confidence in approaching potential employers, according to Australian research. The study, which involved in-depth interviews with 11 people, also found that some felt their lived experience in the criminal justice system was an important “skill” they could offer certain industries.  The researchers say this supports the need for a dedicated specialised employment team within the custodial environment.
