What does homelessness look like in South Australia?

South Aussie researchers have created complex profiles of homelessness in Adelaide, aiming to understand how to better help those in need in the future. The team analysed data from five sources to produce a complex descriptive profile of people experiencing homelessness in Adelaide, including those who sleep rough, couch surf, or use emergency or temporary accommodation. They found men are more likely to ‘sleep rough’, while data including people who couch surf or live in temporary accommodation reveal that people under age 20 represent 21-36% of those experiencing homelessness. The analysis also found inequalities in health, which can further reduce access to housing, income and employment.  Rates of chronic physical and mental illness in those experiencing homelessness are higher than those seen in the non-homeless population, the team adds.
