Current Australian research into non-binary identity shows non-binary Aussies face health challenges from discrimination and barriers but are creating communities where they feel safe, according to a review by Australian authors. With much research on non-binary identity coming from the US and UK, the researchers looked at what types of research has been done around people who identify as non-binary or gender-queer specifically in Australia.  They say much of the current research documents the positive impacts of communities and representation the non-binary community creates for itself, but also that those communities are born from the challenges non-binary people face outside those communities, with the concept of gender identities outside male and female often delegitimised in workplaces, media and community spaces.
