Wetlands threatened by "complex and convoluted" rules for Murray Darling Basin

Publicly released:
Australia; ACT

Conservation efforts for Australia's significant wetlands are being held back by complex and unclear legislation, according to Australian researchers. A study of the Murray Darling Basin Plan's approach to managing the ecological character of the water system has found "complex and convoluted" rules have lead to poor coordination of roles around conservation efforts and a lack of a clear plan to meet Australia's international obligations to protect its significant wetlands.
