Cells in the mammary gland play a key role in breast development during puberty and pregnancy, responding to hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Now, WEHI scientists have found special hormone-sensing progenitor cells that can renew themselves and turn into mature cells. Using advanced imaging and AI, they found these cells were very active and moved around more than others, especially when hormones were involved. The research brings us closer to understanding how breast cancer forms, the authors say.
