We can't be sure that acupuncture works better than other treatments for most health complaints

Publicly released:
Australia; International

Despite hundreds of trials being conducted over the years, it is rare to find studies that definitively show that acupuncture is superior to other active therapies, according to an international review of evidence. The study included Australian data and found that in cases where there was at least a moderate certainty in the evidence, the studies were mostly comparing acupuncture to sham acupuncture, or no treatment at all, rather than another active treatment. The authors say we need better evidence so that doctors, patients, and policymakers can have more confidence that acupuncture does, or does not, have benefits for a certain health condition.
