Wait times to see a psychiatrist in Australia have shot up dramatically compared to the period before the pandemic, according to Australian research. The study used Medicare data to look at wait times from GP referral to the first psychiatric specialist appointment between 2011 and 2022 and found a large increase in wait times that began in 2020. Compared with 2011 when the average wait time was 15 days, wait times rose to an average of 50 days in 2022. The study also found that regional and remote areas consistently experienced longer waits than major cities.
