Vaccine grown in an Aussie plant is shown to be effective at preventing COVID-19

A plant-based COVID-19 vaccine has been shown to be effective at preventing COVID-19. The vaccine is made by using a bacteria to insert the genetic code of the virus into plants, which then start making their own virus-like particles.  These particles are then extracted from the plants and combined with an immune-boosting additive, known as an adjuvant, in the final vaccine. The plants used to grow the vaccine are an Australian native called Nicotiana benthamiana. The study found the vaccine was 69.5 per cent effective against symptomatic infection and 78.8 per cent effective against moderate-to-severe disease, although there is no data on its effectiveness against the Omicron variant.
