COVID-19 vaccination significantly reduces the chance of being hospitalised with pneumonia as a result of the virus, according to a study during a Delta wave in Lombardy, Italy. Using hospital and vaccination data covering the 10 million residents of Lombardy, the researchers say that just 25.1% of the 553 patients admitted to an ICU for COVID-19 pneumonia were vaccinated. Overall, about 78% of the population was vaccinated at the time. They add that the vaccinated patients who got pneumonia were generally older and had more underlying health conditions compared to unvaccinated patients with pneumonia. They say once they were admitted to the ICU, there was no significant difference in survival rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients.
