A new paper in MAI journal explores how deep engagement with mātauranga Māori could help transform research and education. The author argues that due to colonisation, current understandings of mātauranga Māori can be limited to how to do things, without considering why. She writes that in order for mātauranga Māori to help us navigate contemporary and future challenges, the connections between kauae raro (“functional” knowledge relating to language, culture and the environment) and kauae runga (spiritual and philosophical knowledge) must be sustained.
